Feeling Is The Secret: LOA versus Neville
I may get some heat for this post, but it really, really needs to be said: Yes, you are manifesting, but it’s NOT from the Law of Attraction.
In fact, there are quite a few pitfalls in the Law of Attraction ideology that could hold you back from truly experiencing the life you desire. I know because I’ve experienced them firsthand, along with countless others I’ve spoken to.
Before you begin throwing things at me, let me break this down and explain.
There are many different philosophies and schools of thought when it comes to manifesting. These “New Thought” teachings are hardly new, but thanks to 2006 documentary and best-selling book The Secret, one philosophy in particular has catapulted into mainstream popularity and is arguably the biggest self-help phenomenon of the 21st century.
I know I was certainly enthralled by the Law of Attraction when I first learned of the subject. In fact, I set out on what turned into a decade-long spiritual journey to master the art of deliberate creation. I have studied, tested, and documented everything under the sun from dozens, if not hundreds, of New Thought teachers: Napoleon Hill, Wayne Dyer, Abraham Hicks, Bob Proctor, and Joe Vital, just to name a small few.
The result? I’m going to save you guys a lot of time and headache by the end of this post.
Though each teacher varies slightly, The Law of Attraction boiled down claims that you attract what you focus on or give your attention to.
Seems simple and straightforward, right? But most teachers go on to claim the Law of Attraction is backed by science and is, in fact, a Law no different than the Law of Gravity.
LOA gurus explain that “like attracts like”, that if you constantly focus your thoughts on what you want to manifest then those around you whose minds are resonating at the same frequency will be attracted to you. Basically since everything in the universe is vibrating, we attract whatever is vibrating at the same frequency as our thoughts and emotions.
This sounds very science-y on the surface, except for one small caveat: in nature, as a general rule, like doesn’t attract like. Like repels like.
Magnetism and polarity are the best example of this phenomenon. Note the resistance when trying to connect two of the same magnetic poles together. Same thing with electricity, like charges repel each other, while differing charges attract.
So, if our thoughts emit electro-magnetic waves all day and other beings can, in fact detect and respond to them, the far more “natural” assumption is that others with “like” thoughts and similar electromagnetic waves will be repelled, not drawn to us.
This is probably the biggest limitation when it comes to the Law of Attraction, and one that MANY people get hung up on when learning how to manifest.
We all grew up learning about free will, and how we should never impede with another person’s free will or “destiny”, Law of Attraction hammers the same concept, and preaches “if it’s meant to be, it’ll be”.
Take a step back for a moment. If we are in fact the creators, as the Law of Attraction claims, then how can such a limiting belief be instilled? How can these teachers preach that you can do anything, then turn around and place restrictions on your God-given power?
The Law of Attraction also claims that you cannot manifest for other people, or that people can repel your manifestations if they are not a “vibrational match” to you.
False. False false false false FALSE.
I cannot stress it enough. You are GOD. You have the power to do ANYTHING you want, and anyone in your reality will in fact show up exactly how you assume them to show up.
I have personally watched people in my life make a complete 180 transformation. As soon as I imagined them to change, they changed. In the blink of an eye.
Law of Attraction also frowns on manifesting a specific person. I go into more detail in this post, but it essentially boils down to the same thing: you cannot interfere with free will. That you can’t have the thing you want, but to manifest something else instead.
Huh?
Be wary of anything that claims you can have anything, and then backtracks and gives you limitations. Always remember that creation is finished. Every possible outcome or scenario already exists, and is waiting for you to experience. There is NOTHING that you can’t have, or do, or be.
This is by and far the most misleading principle in the Law of Attraction.
LOA claims that there is an “external force” that you must “match a vibration to” in order to manifest. You are taught to ask the universe for the thing that you want, and by raising your vibration to correlate your desire it will become “attracted” to you.
This way of thinking once again leaves you at the mercy of thinking the power belongs to something outside of you.
“Because of your belief in external things you think power into them by transferring the power that you are to the external thing. Realize you yourself are the power you have mistakenly given to outer conditions.”
Neville Goddard
I will stress this until I am blue in the face: YOU are the operant power. There is nothing outside of you that holds power or control over your life.
Neville teaches that everything in your 3D reality is a reflection of you, and that you can change ANY external circumstance by changing your conception of self.
You hold the key to all the power in the universe. All that exists, though it appears without, it is within.
Another concerning trend I’ve noticed is how many LOA gurus will try to lump Neville’s teachings into the Law of Attraction, like they’re one in the same.
This is, once again, false. Neville’s way of teaching is very, very different from the conventional Law of Attraction. Though there are some similarities, there are distinct differences and in my opinion, these differences can make or break your ability to deliberately create your life.
The biggest distinction is that Neville did not teach the Law of Attraction. He taught the Law of Assumption.
Firstly, it’s important to understand what the Law of Assumption actually means. Neville teaches that the way to create anything you desire is simply to assume the feeling of your wish fulfilled. It’s that simple.
There is no vortexes or “vibrations” you need to match. There is no frequency or “alignment” you need to get into. To change anything in your life, you have to change the beliefs and assumptions you hold about it.
Furthermore, everything that you experience is a result of your changing consciousness. The Law of Assumption teaches that changing your assumptions, and assuming the presence of your desire, is the only thing that will bring about your aim. Action is irrelevant, since action itself is a symbol of your state of mind. Your shift in consciousness is the only thing that matters.
The key here rests with your feeling.
It is not enough to “stay positive” all the time to “attract” your desire, as the Law of Attraction teaches. It’s not enough to simply think through a desired scenario, if in the back of your mind you do not believe in it. You must have faith, you must access the way that you think you will feel once you attain your desire, in order for the practice to have the desired impact.
Where most people fail to apply The Law of Assumption successfully is because they do not maintain the feeling of their desire long enough for it to appear before them. They do not persist in the wish fulfilled, but instead react to outside circumstances and allow the physical world to convince them that it is not realistic or possible for them.
This is another important distinction. Law of Attraction teaches that there are “signs” to look out for in your external reality. The Law of Assumption teaches that your external reality is only a shadow of your previous beliefs, assumptions and reactions.
Only when you can maintain the feeling, despite all physical evidence to the contrary, will you be able to manifest the aim that you have chosen for yourself.
I know this is a long post, but I can’t help but be moved to speak this truth and put the word out there as much as possible.
The truth is that there is no Law of Attraction. You are not attracting objects or events, but instead you are selecting a new dimension or “state” where your desire already exists, waiting for you to experience it.
You are not at the mercy of the Universe. The Universe is at the mercy of YOU.
“Chance or accident is not responsible for the things that happen to you, nor is predestined fate the author of your fortune or misfortune. Your subconscious impressions determine the conditions of your world. The subconscious is not selective; it is impersonal and no respecter of persons. The subconscious is not concerned with the truth or falsity of your feeling. It always accepts as true that which you feel to be true.
Feeling is the assent of the subconscious to the truth of that which is declared to be true. Because of this quality of the subconscious there is nothing impossible to man. Whatever the mind of man can conceive and feel as true, the subconscious can and must objectify. Your feelings create the pattern from which your world is fashioned, and a change of feeling is a change of pattern.”
Neville Goddard
Once I began to apply Neville’s teachings, it was as if the entire weight of the world was lifted off my shoulders. I felt a powerful shift unlike anything I’ve ever felt before. It was liberating in the purest sense of the word.
We hold the keys to our own fate and the power to change our circumstances. You can find this out yourself by putting the Law of Assumption to the test.
This is the powerful truth that will set you free.
